Guidelines
The Professional Guidance Series: numbered clinical guidelines and position papers.
Guidelines and standards
What the Association expects of its members, set out plainly.
The Association publishes guidance on the matters where standards matter most: consent and the counselling that precedes it, the facilities and staffing a procedure requires, the recording and audit of outcomes, advertising and the claims that may be made, and the conduct expected of a member.
Guidance is written by working groups of members, consulted on with the membership, and reviewed every three years or sooner if practice changes. Where national regulation exists, the Association’s guidance sits alongside it and never below it.
Published guidance covers
- Consent, counselling and cooling-off periods
- Facility, equipment and staffing standards
- Recording outcomes and conducting audit
- Advertising and the claims that may be made
- Professional conduct and conflicts of interest
How guidance is made
Written by members
A working group of members with experience in the area drafts the text.
Consulted
The membership is consulted before the Executive Committee adopts it.
Reviewed
Every guideline is reviewed at least every three years.
Comment on a draft
Guidance out for consultation is circulated to members, who are encouraged to respond before it is adopted.
